Santa Clara County Youth Poet Laureate Workshop: “Feel Your Feels!” with Charmina “Mia” Rios!

“Feel your Feels!” is a workshop that aims to guide emerging writers to navigate their emotions in writing. Especially in poetry, writing can become a vulnerable experience as its process entails becoming in touch with the many thoughts of the subconscious and the mind fueled by one’s own feelings. Exploring writing through a social-emotional and psychological lens, “Feel your Feels!” provides a space for young writers to be in touch with their emotions and reflective of the life experiences that they would like to write about. Through this workshop, writers will engage in learning how and when to write about their emotional experiences, techniques to structure the writers’ message, brainstorm creative terms and metaphors to depict a writer’s own experiences, discuss popular writing topics that evoke a writer’s most memorable emotions, take part in a ten-minute writing exercise applying from what was learned in the workshop, and get the opportunity to share their rawly written pieces with one another in the shared space.

Charmina “Mia” Rios (she/her) is a 21 year old Filipina from San Jose, CA, and is currently studying Psychology as well as minoring in Music, Sociology, Child & Youth Studies, and Public Service & Community Engagement at the University of San Francisco, in hopes of becoming a social worker. Based on her writing work and spoken word experience, you can find her involvement with the BIPOC/LGBTQIA+ magazine Marías at Sampaguitas/Sampaguita Press publication. Aside from poetry and spoken word, she also enjoys writing songs, making music, and taking passion in advocacy work for the community, especially in her intern experience at South of Market Community Action Network (SOMCAN), Filipino Community Development Corporation (FCDC), Children's After School Arts (CASA) at Rooftop School, and as a leader through her Bay Area AAPI grassroots organization Triple A Movement.
