This month, David Perez leads his workshop “The Element of Surprise”
Great poems have a way of exceeding our expectations. They lead us toward one idea, only to take us in a completely different — and often more rewarding — direction. In this workshop, David will explore the craft of poetic turns: those moments in a poem that defy expectations and open up new possibilities. Through practical exercises and examples, you’ll learn techniques to make your poems more dynamic and engaging. Bring along any unfinished work of your own — adding a poetic turn might be just what they need to feel complete. Join us for a fun and thoughtful look at the art of surprise in poetry.
David Perez served as the 2014-2016 Santa Clara County Poet Laureate. He’s a recipient of the Arts Council Silicon Valley Fellowship for Literary Art and the National Association for Latino Arts and Culture Achievement Award. He’s also a repeat guest on the NPR storytelling series, Snap Judgment and author of the poetry collection, Love in a Time of Robot Apocalypse from Write Bloody Publishing. Most recently, his work has appeared in The Wild Word and the DMQ Review. He has taught literature and creative writing at San Jose State University and Ohlone College in Fremont, CA.
